Top 10 New Electric Vehicles Available in 2020

In a recent article we detailed More than 40 Electric Vehicles Coming by 2021 You Can Afford, but that list includes vehicles you won’t see for more than a year and some vehicles that are unlikely to be sold in volume.  So we updated and filtered that list to the top ten PHEV’s and EV’s you will be able to buy this year.

While General Motors has not made any announcements, 2021 Chevy Bolt refresh test mules with minor head light and tail lamp changes have been spotted on public streets.  In 3 years they have moved about 75,000 bolts world wide and Bolt version 2 is expected to expand beyond its current Canada, US, Mexico and South Korea markets

It has been reported that 20% of Wrangler sales are for the brand new mild hybrid so it is no surprise that FCA (Fiat Chrysler) plans to bring a full plug-in version to market in the summer of 2020.

Fiat Chrysler’s smallest product and first Jeep manufactured outside of the United States (in Italy) has a plug in hybrid version slated for the summer of 2020 which will no doubt boost sales in non-US markets


Mazda MX-30EV

Mazda will take its second best selling vehicle, the MX-30 and make it available as a short range (125 Mile/200 Kilometer which is half the standard in 2020) full EV by the end of summer 2020 as a 2021 model.  They will then follow up with a mild hybrid and Plug In version of the same vehicle in the 2022 model year (summer 2021).


Tesla Model Y

Starting production ahead of schedule, in February 2020, The Model Y will

display sales of the Model X in exactly the same way as the Model 3 largely replaced the classic Model S.  In fact, Telsa’s loud CEO Elon Musk has publicly said he expects the “Y” to outsell all other Telsa models combined after the first year or two of production.

Subaru Crosstrek PHEV

This Crosstrek only allows 27 kilometers of all electric range before the gas engine kicks in.  That is enough to get most people to work but not home, so if you can’t charge at work you likely will be driving with some gasoline each day.  The reason this car did not make the top 10 is because it is already for sale in some US markets and will hit Canada this spring.


Volkswagen Golf Alltrack – aka ID Space Vizzion Concept

VW has been showing the ID Space Vizzion concept for some time now but it is expected to go to market in 2022 as an all electric pure EV with an 82 KW skateboard battery and 205 kW rear electric motor standard.  There will most likely be a front motor, making it all-wheel-drive option, but that has not been confirmed yet
